Spiritual Awakening
Support Group

This is a monthly group held on Zoom for the purpose of exploring and supporting the process of non-dual spiritual awakening. This group is all-inclusive in terms of religious traditions, level of development and spiritual orientation. Each month, a different topic will be explored and the group may include talks, Q&A, guest speakers, practice, meditation, self-inquiry, healing and awakening transmissions, book and scripture discussion of multiple traditions and exploration of patterns and conditioning which may be keeping us stuck in a certain state and unable to take the next step.

This month’s call:
Stages of Awakening

(there are 2 time options to suit different timezones)

Who it’s for and who it’s not for:

This is a group for anyone wishing to explore, deepen or open to spiritual realisation in an embodied and authentic way. This is an all-inclusive group, so please leave any dogma or doctrine at the door. This is not a group for religious or political debate, but rather for those who seek the Truth, Source, God, The Beloved or want to recognise their authentic spiritual nature.

This group is not about having belief or not having belief in anything, but rather is focused on direct experience. We do not preach any kind of fixed model, but rather learn to explore things as they are in our immediate experience. The intention of this group is not to sway anyone out of their current belief system, but rather the orientation is to inquire and realise the truth directly for ourselves. In saying that, if you have a fixed religious model and dismiss any kind of possibility of deepening, then this group may not be for you.

The only requirement is an open mind and the only intention to hold is that of opening to The Divine in the way that you yourself understand or experience it.

About Matt

Matt experienced his initial shift through no intention of his own, but by Grace, in 2016. This was a realisation that what he essentially is, is beyond the thinking mind and beyond time and space. Not long after this, he met his initial teacher, Swamiji Paramananda Saraswati, who helped guide him into abiding in and stabilising this realisation. As this deepened, the awakeness itself began to recognise itself within everything, along with a deep devotion for God/Source as present within all existence.

After this, Matt has gone through a long embodiment process for over a decade, where not only did the sense of “I Am” wake up to itself but began to inhabit itself within the felt sense of the body. Along the way, Matt’s process was supported by many teachers, including Susanne Marie, Brother Domonic, Sailor Bob Adamson, Tom Kurzka, Marlies Cocheret and Peter Lawry. Many more have influenced his process without personal contact, but simply through their presence, teachings and poetry, including Adyashanti, Hameed Ali (A.H Almaas), Ric Weinman, Nisargadatta Maharaj, Ramana Maharshi, Meister Eckhart, St Theresa of Avila, Thomas Merton, Jesus Christ, Kabir, Kahlil Gibran, Siddartha the Buddha, Ryokan, Anandamayi Ma, Neem Karoli Baba, Amma and many more.

All of them have acted as a conduit for the true teacher, Divine Grace, to continue to deepen into itself. There is a deep gratitude and acknowledgement for all the support which continues even now, both tangible and intangible. Also acknowledging what he considers his ongoing greatest teachers in bringing this into the world and continuing to highlight the places inside that still need tending to—his wife and children.

His approach and attitude toward awakening is that it must be both transcending and inclusive, where everything that has existence—right down to the very deepest corners of our humanity and those parts that we often pursue spirituality in an attempt to get rid of—wake up to themselves as That. Even though Matt’s own personal journey has been experienced at different times through the lens of Contemplative Christianity, Advaita Vedanta, Zen Buddhism and Sufi Mysticism his style and approach does not follow any one religious or spiritual model, bunt includes all as potential rivers that can lead one to the same

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Awakening is a shift in identity, from identification with being a particular person with a name and form to the recognition of something much more fundamental. The initial awakening is not something that happens to the person we usually take ourselves to be, but is an awakening of consciousness itself from the personality. Awakening is not a final state or experience, but recognising that which is prior to all experience and from which everything we do experience arises. There are multiple phases we go through after this initial awakening, including what we call “Unity Consciousness” and beyond. Awakening is not a belief system or model, but an immediate shift in the way one experiences themselves and reality. Awakening itself is the beginning of a long seemingly never ending trajectory of deepening, refinement and openings to the secrets of existence.

  • No, an awakening that has matured along the path is not a dissociated experience, but rather has gone through a process of transcend and include. Transcendence is a needed stage along the path, as it is the process of “waking up.” Waking up is an up-and-out movement where we essentially recognise ourselves as beyond time and space, beyond our conditioned patterns and beyond the conceptual understanding we once had of being a separate isolated self. We experience our True Nature as being unconditioned consciousness.

As awakening matures, all that was transcended becomes recognised as the very same substance of the awake field of consciousness that was recognised in the initial shift. This is a movement of unification, where everything that was woken up “from” is awakened to as also That. In a more mature awakening, our humanity is fully included—not as something separate from that which we have realised but as an ever-refining expression and embodiment of it. As this recognition matures, we can no longer distinguish between the unmanifest Source and the manifest world, and life becomes experienced as Non-Dual, with the process eventually leading us beyond consciousness altogether.

  • This group is not a self-help group or about “gaining” anything, but the explorations and offerings here can help to soften one into a process that is already happening within them or have the intention to ignite the flame of grace within to begin its unfolding. The process of awakening is one of dissolution, and this can be a very difficult process for many people. The challenges and traps along the way can be many. This group is here to help those of us devoted to discovering Truth build further capacity to allow the process to unfold according to the deeper intelligence that is driving it.

  • As things have unfolded here, it has become clear that there are no truly adequate models or stages that can capture the process. Though there are themes that run through people’s processes universally, these themes will be discussed in various groups according to the needs of those joining.

  • Awakening happens by grace. It is not something we can “make” happen through any kind of effort on our behalf, though effort is still needed, especially in the early stages. We can use practices such as meditation, self-inquiry, devotion, embodiment and other methods to prepare our mind and system for grace to open things for us. It requires effort to begin with, which eventually leads us to effortlessness. The effort is used to unglue ourselves from identifications with the thinking mind and continue to deepen and open into what is prior to that. As that effort takes us outside of the gravitational pull of our everyday identities, through grace we begin to recognise in deeper ways that this is our essential nature and abide in that which we have come to recognise as our essence and the essence of everything.

  • These are some common myths we collectively hold about the nature of awakening, but as we deepen our understanding and experience, we begin to see them as simply the mind’s fantasy of living in some kind of ideal heavenly state where we have escaped all of life’s problems. There are many more myths and misconceptions than what is written below, which we will discuss at certain times in the group.

    • Awakening will resolve all of our suffering

    • We lose our humanity and live in a transcendent cloud

    • It is a final “state” or constant “experience” of enlightenment

    • We will no longer experience anger, reactivity or challenges

    • Our lives will be perfect; we will be able to manifest anything we want

    • We will live in a constant state of bliss

    • We will always act in a way that is unconditionally loving

    • We will meet God as an object within our consciousness as something separate from everything else

    • All our trauma, conditioning and wounds will be magically resolved

    • An awakened teacher will have no wounds, no shadows, and no issues
